WIND Hellas Acquires New 4G Spectrum
- Secured 2 blocks of 2X5 in the 800 MHz band and 4 blocks in the 2.6 GHz band at euro 121.8 mln
- LTE roll-out to deliver high quality next generation mobile services in the Greek market, already happening
ATHENS, Greece, Oct. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- WIND Hellas Telecommunications S.A. ("WIND Hellas"), a leading integrated telecommunications provider headquartered in Athens, Greece, announced today that following a multiple round auction it has acquired spectrum of 2 x 10MHz in the 800MHz band and 2 x 20MHz in the 2.6GHz band, for a total of euro 121.8 million, in line with reserve prices set by the regulator. The licenses have an initial term of 15 years and will take effect on February 28, 2015.
The spectrum will support WIND's current 4G roll-out and provide the necessary bandwidth to meet the traffic and network capacity demand of a growing market.
"We will incorporate this new spectrum into our network modernization and the current rollout of LTE services. This is a significant investment in critical spectrum that will allow us to meet the growing consumer demand for 4G mobile broadband and provide consumers the fastest data service" WIND Hellas CEO and Chairman, Nassos Zarkalis said. "At the same time we add to our competitiveness and boost the company's investment value for shareholders".
WIND Hellas will be able to make use of the newly acquired spectrum bands almost immediately as it has already begun deploying a next generation mobile network using Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. Mobile Broadband penetration in Greece is currently below EU average but has a strong upward trend as mobile users are becoming data-hungry.
