WICHITA, Kan., March 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- U-Haul Company's recent acquisition and adaptive reuse of an abandoned tire manufacturing plant has residents of Wichita excited for a new full-service store for the do-it-yourself mover in Sedgwick County.
U-Haul Moving & Storage of McAdams Park at 1000 E. 13th St. N. has been renting trucks and trailers for nearly a year but officially took possession of the property in September 2015.
When construction is completed this year, U-Haul customers will have access to 600 climate-controlled, indoor storage units as well as propane. In addition to trucks and trailers, this store is currently offering moving supplies, towing equipment and hitch installation, and U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers.
"It will be exciting when construction is complete and we can offer climate-controlled storage units," U-Haul Company of Southern Kansas president Aaron Krueger said. "Before U-Haul acquired this property, we did not have this service in the Wichita area."
The property features a 100-year-old, two-story building with 53,700 square feet. It originally served as a tire plant and has housed many businesses through the years. It was being used as a storage warehouse before U-Haul acquired the 1.93-acre piece of real estate.
"Many of our customers have stated they needed a U-Haul store in this neighborhood," general manager Garrett Schaper said. "They want to see what we can do with this old building."
"Customers will now have access to all of our U-Haul products without having to travel a great distance across town, so it's a huge convenience for them," Krueger added.
The store is located just off Interstate 135 at the 13th Street exit. It sits at the corner of Wabash Street directly across the street from McAdams Park and the recreational facility. It's also within a few miles of Wichita State University and one mile north of downtown, giving college students and downtown businesses the opportunity to pick up and drop off U-Haul rentals with ease.
The acquisition of U-Haul Moving & Storage of McAdams Park was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
