WhyTuesday.org Announces Cash Video Contest
"Get Out The Why" Rewards Citizen Journalists For Videos of Lawmakers And Influential Americans Who Answer, "Do You Know Why Election Day Is On Tuesday?"
$25,000 cash prize for a clip of President Obama answering the question
NEW YORK, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Why Tuesday? a non-partisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3) committed to increasing American voter turnout, today announces the return of its Get Out the Why video contest. Launching October 26th, 2010 and ending Election Day (November 2, 2010), Get Out the Why is a biennial national call to encourage anyone with gumption and a video camera to ask lawmakers and influential Americans why Election Day is on Tuesday—all in the interest of sparking a national discussion about election reform.
"There are proffered solutions out there from electronic registration to online voting, but the one question no one can answer with a straight face is why Election Day is a Tuesday in November," said former Atlanta Mayor and WhyTuesday.org co-Founder Ambassador Andrew Young. "And now America, the beacon of democracy, ranks 139 out of 172 countries worldwide in voter turnout and dead last among the G8."
"The reason we vote on Tuesday is because of an antiquated 1845 law meant to make voting convenient for farmers who traveled by horse-drawn-carriage," said WhyTuesday.org's executive director Jacob Soboroff. "It's time for an upgrade. We are excited to enlist America's citizen journalists in the war on low voter turnout."
According to the rules of the competition, each person who gets a politician or "influencer" (see the list of leaders and influencers at WhyTuesday.org/getoutthewhy) on camera answering the question, "Do you know why Election Day is on Tuesday?" gets his/her video posted to WhyTuesday.org and a cash reward.
