WashDCHotels & B. F. Saul Company Recognize International Housekeeper's Week With Participation in Annual Housekeeping Olympics
BETHESDA, Md., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- This year, International Housekeeper's Week, a week-long celebration, kicks off this week, Monday, September 13 and runs through Sunday, September 19. Celebrated nationally since 1981, this week is dedicated to recognizing the men and women who maintain clean and safe environments for the world's hotels every day. In honor of International Housekeeper's Week, housekeeping teams from each of WashDCHotels' 14 hotels in the DC Metro Area will be invited to participate in the 3rd Annual B. F. Saul Company Housekeeping Olympics on Friday, September 17, 2010 at 2 PM (EDT).
Individuals and teams will compete in several housekeeping events that measure skill and timeliness. The Crowne Plaza Tysons Corner hotel, one of the featured properties of WashDCHotels, is proud to host this event for the third year in a row. In addition to a "Spirit Award" to the most vivacious hotel team, Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals will be awarded in each event and the hotel team with the most points will win the B. F. Saul Company Hotel Division Trophy. This year's events consist of:
- Toilet Bowl Basketball – In this individual event, each hotel will enter one contestant to participate in this event. Each contestant will have 60 seconds to toss as many rolls of toilet paper he or she can into a toilet bowl 20 feet away. The contestant with the most "baskets" wins 50 points for his or her hotel, with the follow up contestants receiving fewer points for their respective hotels.
- General Managers' Bed Making Race – General Managers from each of the B. F. Saul hotels in the Washington DC area will compete in this race to make a bed (including triple sheeting, pillows and pillowcases, and comforter/duvet) in three minutes. Beds will be judged by the two of the B. F. Saul Company's corporate team members, with assistance from some of most senior housekeepers from the competing hotels.
- Obstacle Course Relay – This three part timed relay consists of 3-legged vacuuming, folding, and pushing a bar of soap with a broom through obstacles. Two contestants tethered together from each team will start by navigating a vacuum through the obstacle course. Once completed, the next team member will neatly fold three sets of towels. In the final relay, a contestant will push a bar of soap with a broom back through the obstacles to the finish line.
Mark Carrier, Senior VP of B. F. Saul Company Hotel Division, a DC based hotel ownership and management group, stated, "The games were scheduled in conjunction with International Housekeepers Week and were designed to create a competitive spirit and demonstrate appreciation for the team members. Everyone wins gold for their effort and enthusiasm."
Last year, the Crowne Plaza National Airport hotel located in Crystal City, VA won the Housekeeping Olympics overall. The Crowne Plaza's General Manager, Jim Weadbrock, states, "Our housekeeping team takes a lot of pride in their work, and I think it was evident in last year's gold medal performance. I wouldn't be surprised if they won again this year."
Winners of individual events last year included the Holiday Inn National Airport hotel, the Hampton Inn & Suites Dulles Airport hotel, and the Holiday Inn hotel by Dulles Airport. Video clips of the event can be viewed on WashDCHotels' Facebook page. For real time updates of all the action, go to the WashDCHotels' Twitter page and search for the Housekeeping Olympics' hash tag, #cleanolympics. Updates will start on Friday, September 17 at 2 PM.
