Wanted: Heroes -- Community Foundation Launches Search for Extraordinarily Charitable Angelenos
LOS ANGELES, June 20, 2011 – California Community Foundation is launching a search throughout Los Angeles County for persons who are impacting lives, here or elsewhere, through extraordinary and unselfish acts of charity. They, and several remarkable nonprofit organizations that have already been identified, will be honored at an awards ceremony this fall as L.A.'s Unsung Heroes of 2011.
To be nominated as Unsung Heroes, persons must have recently engaged in a charitable act that is significant and lasting, involves personal sacrifice, unusual creativity and resourcefulness, or meets other award criteria that define it as "extraordinary." Nominated individuals must be residents of L.A. County, even if their charitable work extends to communities or populations beyond. The deadline for nominations is July 15, 2011. Nomination criteria and forms are available at www.calfund.org/unsungheroes.
"Everyday in L.A., people are doing things for others that are extraordinarily charitable, with little to no attention to themselves," said Antonia Hernandez, president and CEO of L.A.'s community foundation. "We wish to publicly recognize a few of these individuals because they are inspirational to others, as well as several remarkable nonprofit organizations because they deserve greater support, as the Unsung Heroes of L.A."
Unsung Heroes is co-sponsored by The Eisner Foundation. Additional media sponsors include Southern California Public Radio 89.3 KPCC.
