Innovative New Products and Services
VoltDB continued to bring innovative, industry-leading products to the Big Data market during 2011. In April, the company introduced VoltDB 1.3, a cornerstone of which was the VoltDB Enterprise Manager and its REST programming interfaces. In June, the company added enterprise-class Hadoop integration to VoltDB, creating a simple and fast front-end database to leading Hadoop distributions. Version 2.0 of VoltDB was released in September and highlighted Command Logging, a breakthrough database durability solution. Finally, in October the company released VoltOne, a single-server version of VoltDB capable of processing more than 125,000 ACID transactions per second on a commodity Linux server.
VoltDB products are easy to install, integrate, and use for the high velocity component in Big Data applications. All product distributions include VoltDB Studio, a database developer productivity tool, and VoltCache, a Key/Value caching interface that provides functional compatibility with memcached.
Industry Accolades
During 2011, Information Management Magazine named VoltDB among "40 Vendors We're Watching in 2011", and fundedIdeas listed VoltDB among its global "Top 300 Start-ups for 2011". VoltDB continued to earn industry recognition throughout the year, being named to Gartner's exclusive "Cool Vendors" roster, and a winner of Lead411's "2011 Hot Companies" watch list.
New Customers and Partners
In 2011, leading organizations selected VoltDB for applications requiring blazing throughput, linear scale and ACID consistency. New customers in 2011 included Shopzilla, a global provider of specialty websites connecting shoppers with over 100 million products from tens of thousands of retailers; Cowen, a diversified financial services firm; Jingit.com, a highly-innovative payment and cash based transactional advertising platform; and Booyah, a leading provider of massively multi-player games with more than 20 million worldwide users.
"VoltDB gives us a highly scalable database foundation that can handle our most demanding throughput requirements," said Dave Morehouse, vice president of engineering at Jingit.com. "While many database systems are capable of scaling reads, we found VoltDB uniquely capable of scaling reads and writes of large active datasets, while maintaining a relational model and SQL semantics. I would recommend VoltDB to anyone looking to build high scaling database applications. For us, it was the obvious choice."
During 2011, VoltDB formed strategic technology relationships with Cloudera and HortonWorks, two key players in the Hadoop market. VoltDB's streaming export subsystem was enhanced to deliver high velocity data to leading Hadoop environments, providing customers with a single, integrated "Big Data" infrastructure. In support of real-time analytic applications, VoltDB also created a strategic relationship with Jaspersoft, a leading provider of business intelligence solutions.
New Company Leadership
Sam Berg, formerly a sales executive at Nexaweb, SAP and IBM, joined VoltDB as the company's vice president of field operations. Berg is leading VoltDB's next phase of direct revenue growth, as well as developing a growing list of channel partners, distributors and resellers. John Piekos also joined VoltDB as vice president of engineering in 2011. A former Progress, EasyAsk and Novera engineering leader, Piekos now leads all of VoltDB's product and field engineering initiatives.
"With the launch of exciting new products, a rapidly-growing base of customers, clear industry recognition and the addition of high-caliber leadership, 2011 was a year of great achievements," said Scott Jarr, VoltDB's chief executive officer. "Big Data has grabbed the industry by storm and, as part of that wave, high velocity data applications are the next great wave of solutions that will drive tremendous value for enterprises. It is an exciting time to be in the database space and we expect to see even greater milestones achieved in 2012."
