Butterfield has more than 25 years of executive-level experience in the software and network system management industries, most notably as Chairman and CEO of Altiris. During his tenure at Altiris, Butterfield led the company to eight consecutive years of revenue growth and profitability, growing annual revenues from $3 million to $339 million. Altiris was acquired by Symantec Corporation in 2007 and Butterfield continued to lead as group president of server and storage management at Symantec.

Prior to joining Vivint Solar, Butterfield was a managing partner at SageCreek Partners, a technology investment firm. In addition to Altiris, Butterfield was also group president of server and storage management at Symantec Corporation and has held executive positions at Vinca Corporation and Novell.
Butterfield has served as a chairman or a board member for RES Software, Needle, Utah Valley University, Utah's Technology Council, Utah Information Technology Association, and Omniture. In 2002, Butterfield won the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and finance from Brigham Young University.
