Virginia Eye Institute First in Central Virginia to Offer LenSx® Laser Surgery
RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Virginia Eye Institute (VEI) is bringing a new standard of precision to cataract patients by adding LenSx® Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery to its service offerings. This custom, blade-free cataract removal option allows surgeons to use exacting, individualized specifications unattainable with standard cataract surgery.
"We're excited to be the first center in central Virginia to offer LenSx," says Bradley Smith, CEO at VEI. "The same technology that we offer in our bladeless LASIK program is now available for people who suffer from cloudy vision due to cataracts."
Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the United States. With the first wave of baby boomers turning 65, the number of people suffering from decreased vision due to cataracts is only expected to grow. "The ability to use a laser instead of a blade to treat the growing cataract population is really exciting," he says.
The procedure can also reduce dependence on eyeglasses. "When cataract surgery is done with advanced intraocular lenses and the LenSx Laser to correct astigmatism, patients can see better without glasses," says Winston Trice, M.D., who specializes in vision correction surgery at VEI.
"We see firsthand that just because someone needs eye surgery it doesn't mean they have to be dependent on spectacles or reading glasses," agrees VEI cataract surgeon Francis La Rosa, M.D., Ph.D.
The rapid advancements in medical technology underscore VEI's commitment to patient education. Notes Dr. La Rosa, "When we provide patients with every available medical option, patients win."
