The theme for Hamburg's opening event to celebrate the beginning of the European Green Capital 2011 was titled "Hamburg in Motion". At the weekend, climate and environmental protection was generated Hamburg-style on the "Sustainable Dance Floor" in front of the town hall. Following Stockholm in 2010, Hamburg was recently awarded the title "European Green Capital 2011" by the European Commission. The title is bestowed on cities that have excelled in the field of environmental protection. At the same time, the EU commission is hoping that the award will make European cities advance their environment-related activities, while exchanging best practice examples and competing with each other. By displaying various best practice examples, the north German city is proving how even a highly industrialised port city such as Hamburg can succeed in combining ecological sustainability with economic growth.
