VIDEO from European Parliament Available on thenewsmarket.com: Hungary is Heading for EU Controversy
NEW YORK, Jan. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- See video from European Parliament at:
A giant carpet featuring a map of "Greater Hungary" installed by Hungary in Brussels to mark the start of its EU presidency has triggered accusations of nationalist nostalgia in Budapest. The map, which is depicting parts of Romania, Slovakia and Serbia which have formally belonged to the Habsbourg empire, is considered by the MEP's from the countries in the region, as a reflection of the nostalgic sentiments of the actual Hungarian government. "All those references to the past are reflecting a mentality which cannot get rid of that past and which is disconnected from the present realities of the European Union, from the actual project of the EU," said Adrian Severin (Romania), the vice President of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament. "This type of fanatic attachment to the past and of ignorance of the present and of the future is typical only to the Hungarian political force," he added. For the leader of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, the situation is very preoccupying: "It seems to me that they are testing how far they can go. To be honest, this carpet in the European Council, an organisation representing across border policy, showing the Greater Hungary in the borders of 1848 is not a historical gift, it is, in my eyes, a signal of the government: we, with our two-third majority in the Parliament we are untitled to discuss even of our borders." Following Spain and Belgium, Hungary has taken on the presidency of the Council of the European Union on the 1st of January 2011, for the first time since it joined in 2004.
