VIASPACE Giant King Grass Featured in Shenzhen China's Top Newspapers
CEO interviewed at Peking University Shenzhen School of Environment and Energy
IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 1, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- VIASPACE Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: VSPC), a clean energy company growing Giant King™ Grass as a low-carbon, renewable biomass crop, reported that Chief Executive Dr. Carl Kukkonen was interviewed by two of the largest newspapers in Shenzhen, China following his presentation on Giant King Grass at the first anniversary Symposium of the School of Environment and Energy, Peking University Graduate School in Shenzhen on October 10, 2010. The School of Environment and Energy was established to address critical environment and energy issues arising from China's rapid economic growth. Kukkonen was in Asia for much of October for business and technical meetings.
The story in the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily—the city's top newspaper and one of the most influential in China-- was headlined "Using Giant King Grass to Generate Electricity is 1/4th the Cost of Solar" and featured a picture of Dr. Kukkonen with Giant King Grass. The article went on to say that Giant King Grass was a great renewable alternative to replace coal. In addition, the cost of generating electricity with Giant King Grass is only 1/4 solar, 1/2 of wind, and substantially cheaper than natural gas and crude oil. At the end of the article, the paper noted that only 80 million hectares of Giant King Grass could replace the world's need for coal.
Shenzhen, just north of Hong Kong, is one of the fastest growing cities in the world with a total population of approximately 18,000,000. Being southern China's major financial centre, Shenzhen is home to the Shenzhen Stock exchange as well as the headquarters of numerous high-tech companies. Shenzhen is also the third busiest container port in China, ranking only after Shanghai and Hong Kong. Shenzhen is in Guangdong province China where VIASPACE has its Giant King Grass plantation.
The Shenzhen Economic Daily, an authoritative comprehensive newspaper with focus on economic reporting, reported that CEO Carl Kukkonen introduced Giant King Grass to a group of professionals in the energy industry. Mr. Kukkonen showed the benefits of Giant King Grass, and the special energy grass is already grown by his company in the Guangdong Province.
The presentation, entitled "Dedicated Energy Crops for Bioenergy" is available on the lower right of the VIASPACE website homepage at www.VIASPACE.com . The newspaper stories in Chinese are also available.
Kukkonen commented, "I was honored to be a presenter at the Symposium. China is moving aggressively to train students to address environmental and energy issues in their rapidly growing economy, and I was pleased to be able to interact with their students and faculty members. Professor Shu Geng, founding Dean of the graduate School of Environment and Energy (SEE) is also a professor of Plant Sciences at the University of California, Davis, where I received my Bachelor of Science degree and I now serve on the Dean's Advisory Council. I was happy to give UC Davis Dean Winston Ko and SEE Associate Dean Jiong Ma a tour of our Giant King Grass plantation and look forward to future collaborations with both institutions."
VIASPACE plans to issue a business update on Giant King Grass and Green Logs™ in the near future.
