Veterans Business Battle to welcome ret. Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell in Houston
HOUSTON, Jan. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Decorated veteran, author and philanthropist Marcus Luttrell will deliver a keynote speech at an awards banquet Feb. 25 recognizing veteran entrepreneurs.
The banquet, hosted by the Houston chapter of the global non-profit Entrepreneurs' Organization, is the culmination of the EO-Houston Veterans Business Battle (www.vetbizbattle.com), a business plan competition for veterans seeking investment capital. In the organization's first two years, more than $1.7 million of investment offers were extended to finalists. Applications will be accepted through Jan. 15, which is a newly extended deadline.
Luttrell is author of best-selling book Lone Survivor, which tells the story of his time in Iraq as a member of the U.S. Navy SEALs and Operation Red Wings. After his medical release from the Navy, Luttrell established the Lone Survivor Foundation, which helps wounded veterans and their families.
"Marcus Luttrell's compelling story of survival has inspired many, and we at Veterans Business Battle are especially eager to learn how, by sharing his story in his book and the movie it inspired, he ventured on an accidental path of entrepreneurship," said Mark Martin, Veterans Business Battle Chairman. "Veterans just starting out in the business world can learn much from his experience."
The winners of the competition, which will be held earlier that day at Rice University, will be announced at the dinner.
The competition, which partners with the U.S. Small Business Association, Amegy Bank, the City of Houston and Rice University, is open to start-ups and existing businesses ready to grow.
To compete, individuals or teams must apply on the competition's website, www.vetbizbattle.com, by January 15. Tickets for the dinner may also be purchased on the website. Seats start at $150.
Portions of the proceeds from the dinner will go toward the Rice University Veterans in Business Association Military Scholars Program, which provides scholarships for veterans pursuing a Rice MBA degree.
Veterans Business Battle was established in 2015 by The Houston chapter of Entrepreneurs' Organization and Rice University's Veterans in Business Association. The competition aims to foster entrepreneurship among veterans, grow veteran-owned businesses and give back to veterans seeking to make a difference in the business world.
