Valencell Launches BioPack™, the World's First Accurate Biometric Sensor System that Accelerates Wearable Technology Product Development
A complete biometric sensor system powered by highly-accurate PerformTek® technology for "plug-and-play" integration in wrist and arm wearables
RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Valencell, a leader in biometric data sensor technology, today launched BioPack, the first biometric sensor package that incorporates Valencell's PerformTek biometric technology in a pre-packaged system for immediate integration in wrist and arm wearables, as well as other form factors. It is well-known in the industry that wearable biometric sensor systems are difficult to engineer with a high level of accuracy and user comfort. BioPack is the first commercial solution of its kind that delivers the high level of accuracy needed to meet user expectations.
BioPack provides the patent-protected, high-performance biometric technology that customers have come to expect from Valencell, but in a pre-packaged system that accelerates time-to-market and streamlines product development for wearables. With BioPack, customers can shorten product commercialization lifecycles by two to four months, resulting in as much as $500,000 in cost savings associated with manufacturing set-up and tooling processes and engineering development effort. BioPack also significantly reduces overall project risk, as it eliminates any schedule or technical risk related to validating the biometric technology that is common to most biometric wearable projects.
"The launch of this product supports our longstanding commitment to accuracy and seamless integration of our PerformTek biometric sensor technology," said Dr. Steven LeBoeuf, president and co-founder of Valencell. "For those who need accurate consumer solutions for health, performance, or fitness monitoring, our patent-protected BioPack sensor system packs all you need for high accuracy, extremely short product development timelines and continually interesting user experiences."
BioPack includes Valencell's patented PerformTek technology, which can extract continuous heart rate, VO2, calories burned, and more with scientifically-validated accuracy. Moreover, the BioPack sensor system will support Valencell's next-gen biometric roadmap, including breathing rate, cardiac efficiency, heart rate variability and much more. Valencell designers have determined the right combination of optomechanics, light detector, accelerometer, LEDs and microcontrollers for a scalable design that offers the most effective combination of accuracy, power, size and cost. The interface is a standard flex connector that supports either UART or I2C communications. The optical and electrical assembly is designed for simple integration into customers' mechanical layout with minimal interference to existing industrial design and production methods.
Valencell has helped more companies bring biometric wearables to market than any other company in the world and now makes that expertise available to BioPack customers. BioPack customers can take advantage of Valencell's product design guidance from a team of expert biometric engineers, as well as product testing and validation in Valencell's world-class Biometrics Lab.
Valencell is working with some of the world's best electronics companies for component parts in BioPack, including STMicroelectronics.
"Leveraging the high accuracy of our MEMS sensor technology and exceptional range, flexibility, and ecosystem of the STM32 microcontroller family, Valencell's BioPack enables wearables makers to quickly and easily develop wellness products that integrate highly accurate biometrics," said Luca Difalco, Vice President of Marketing and Applications at STMicroelectronics.
According to IDC, vendors shipped a total of 21 million wearables in the third quarter of 2015 alone – a 197.6 percent increase from the 7.1 million wearables shipped in the same quarter last year. It is estimated that wrist-worn wearables, including bands, bracelets, and watches, will account for more than 80 percent of these units. Valencell believes the winners in the wearables market will be those companies that provide highly accurate biometrics in their wearable devices.
