U.S. Dredging Firms Have Capability & Expertise to Accomplish Berm Building in Gulf of Mexico
WASHINGTON, June 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Dredging Contractors of America (DCA) is pleased to hear that BP will be funding all six berm sites for the temporary protection of Louisiana's marshes and wetlands. DCA members look forward to working with all the parties involved with this permit process, including the Coast Guard, the State of Louisiana and its parishes, BP, and the Corps of Engineers to discuss the logistics, operations and processes that will be involved with this work. We have analyzed the conceptual proposals in the State's permit and are certain that we have the dredge capability and engineering expertise to execute all of this work. Barry Holliday, DCA Executive Director, points out, "Attempting to construct these narrow berms, with dredged material from distant borrow sources, is more of an engineering challenge than a dredging issue, and requires experienced shore crews, experienced project management, and experienced dredge operators. The U.S. dredging industry is well qualified and capable of executing this work, and several of our companies have extensive experience working in Louisiana's unique coastal environment."
There are many environmental sensitivities that must be constantly monitored during this work, and the U.S. dredging industry is experienced and knowledgeable of these concerns. "We have consistently demonstrated our expertise in sustainable dredging and dredged material placement, in many cases executing the work with innovative and specialized technology and equipment," Holliday says.
