THURSDAY, JULY 8: HOT DOGS

Profile America -- Thursday, July 8th.  Local businesses in Luverne, Minnesota, will host a unique annual event for the 47th time this evening, in which some 12,000 hot dogs and drinks will be given away free in a street fair setting.  This is just one event celebrating National Hot Dog Month.  Whether we call them frankfurters -- noting their German origin, wieners, or just plain hot dogs, we love them.  From Memorial Day to Labor Day, we will eat 7 billion of them.  Americans will eat enough hot dogs just at major league ballparks this year to stretch from Philadelphia to St. Petersburg, Florida, and back again.  Hot dogs are an important part of the $26 billion a year processed meat industry in the U.S.  You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
