WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3: NYC INCORPORATED
Profile America — Wednesday, February 3rd. The largest city in the U.S., New York, became an official entity on this date in 1653. The magistrates of the Dutch Colony of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island signed a municipal charter, making the colony a city. Eleven years later, the English took over the colony and changed its name to New York, in honor of the Duke of York. The first census in 1790 showed New York was home to just over 33,000 people. By 1860, its population had grown to more than 813,000. Only 40 years later in 1900, New York had exploded to nearly 3.5 million. In 2000, the census counted just over 8 million New Yorkers. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, conducting the 2010 Census beginning April 1st.
