SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20: 1820 CENSUS
Profile America — Saturday, February 20th. The national census this April will be the 23rd time this once-a-decade count has been conducted since 1790. The 4th census in 1820 profiled a nation evolving both politically and in its infrastructure. John Quincy Adams directed the census, which counted 9.6 million people. Washington, D.C., had a population of just over 13,000. In the decade to follow, Andrew Jackson became the first president elected by popular vote, the tomato was proven not to be poisonous, and the Erie Canal opened. At the end of the decade, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad became the first to carry passengers and freight — for a total distance of 13 miles.
