FRIDAY, APRIL 30: 2000 CENSUS

Profile America — Friday, April 30th.  The national census now under way is the 23rd time this once-a-decade count has been conducted since 1790.  The most recent census in 2000 profiled a nation increasingly concerned about terrorism.  It counted more than 281 million people.  In the decade to follow, a coordinated terrorist attack of hijacked airliners hit the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon, killing almost 3,000 people.  As a result, the U.S. headed a coalition of nations in military action in both Iraq and Afghanistan.  As the decade ended, social networking programs on the Internet, such as Facebook, swept the nation.  You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
