FRIDAY, APRIL 23: 1990 CENSUS
Profile America — Friday, April 23rd. The national census now under way is the 23rd time this once-a-decade count has been conducted since 1790. The 21st census in 1990 profiled a nation coming to grips with increasingly difficult domestic and foreign problems. The census counted nearly 249 million people. Los Angeles ousted Chicago as the second largest city in the U.S. In the decade to follow, the Hubble Telescope was launched into space, and the U.S. headed a coalition of nations to end Iraq's occupation of Kuwait. At the end of the decade, the Panama Canal was returned to Panama. Profile America is presented by the U.S. Census Bureau, reminding you — take part in the 2010 Census and put your census form in the mail.
