SATURDAY, APRIL 10: 1940 CENSUS
Profile America -- Saturday, April 10th. The national census now under way is the 23rd time this once-a-decade count has been conducted since 1790. The 16th census in 1940 profiled a nation on the brink of World War II. That census -- considered by historians to be the first modern census -- counted 132 million people in a nation of 48 states. The decade that followed was dominated by World War II. In the nearly four years that America was involved, some 292,000 U.S. soldiers, sailors, and airmen were killed in battle. After the war, the G.I. bill helped thousands of returning veterans to buy houses and go to college, and the so-called baby boom began. Profile America is presented by the U.S. Census Bureau, reminding you -- take part in the 2010 Census.
