UNITY Supports Ecuadorian Journalists
MCLEAN, Va., April 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- UNITY Journalists of Color supports its colleagues in Ecuador and shares their concerns about a proposed new communications law being considered by the National Assembly. If approved, this law will affect press freedom and free speech by breaching Inter-American principles on the public's right to information.

UNITY urges the members of Ecuador's National Assembly to ensure that any new laws they approve contain unrestricted respect for freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and freedom of access to information that are consistent with the Constitution of Ecuador, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations, the American Convention on Human Rights (Pact of San Jose), and the Declaration of Chapultepec of which Ecuador is a signatory.
We also call on President Rafael Correa and the National Assembly to repeal existing "insult laws" that have led to criminal defamation suits against nine Ecuadorian journalists and news directors in the past four years
UNITY believes that a free press is one of the pillars of a democracy and it is our hope that Ecuador will adhere to the principles that guarantee the free flow of information and ideas.
