Bahrain Establishes Educational and Cultural Exchange Program with the United States Department of State
MANAMA, Bahrain, Oct. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Under a new educational and cultural exchange program, members of the United States Congress are visiting Bahrain to gain a further understanding of the country and its people while strengthening political ties. The delegation included U.S. Congressman Eni Faleomavaega (D-AS), Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), and Congressman Donald Payne (D-NJ).
Yesterday, the delegation met with HM King Hamad, where he stressed that programs like these are vital to achieving joint goals. Further, the king praised the two countries' historical ties and the United States' role in helping maintain peace and security in the region. He went on to brief the Congressional members on the state of Bahrain's reform project, as well as the importance of the National Dialogue and the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry's (BICI) forthcoming report.
The Congressional delegation to Bahrain is the first such visit under the new exchange program, which aims to provide an in-depth look at Bahrain's political, social, economic and cultural climate. The program gives insight into a variety of sectors of Bahraini society with visits to federal departments and agencies, universities, schools, companies, think-tanks and associations. In addition, visits to cultural and historical sites, special events and functions, give participants access to federal, state and municipal programs. All U.S. Members of Congress, Congressional Staff, and other federal employees are welcome to participate in the program. Future delegation visits will focus on international trade, cultural and social topics and political issues.
