UCAP Programs Spotlighted During Maryland Capital for a Day Program
Housing Secretary Raymond A. Skinner Visits UCAP
CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md., April 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- United Communities Against Poverty, Inc. (UCAP), hosted Secretary Ray Skinner, Department of Housing and Community Development, as part of Governor Martin O'Malley's 2010 "Capital for a Day" Program. Governor Martin O'Malley made Capitol Heights, MD, the first "Capital for a Day" destination for the 2010 series. The monthly program brings the State Capital to every corner of Maryland through a series of events across a diverse selection of Maryland cities, towns and communities. It fulfills the long-standing promise of an engaging, efficient, and effective government; one that works on behalf of all Marylanders.

UCAP's Board Chair, Arthur A. Turner, Jr. and the UCAP staff welcomed Secretary Skinner and provided a tour of the facility. Sandra Gammons, President/CEO of UCAP, briefed Secretary Skinner on UCAP's programs and services, highlighting the Foreclosure Prevention Program and the Green Industry Certification Program (GICP).
GICP, the only program of this type in Prince George's County, MD, is a collaborative green workforce initiative between UCAP, US Green Building Council, Joint School of Carpentry, Team Builders, and Prince George's County Community College. The training includes six (6) weeks of pre-apprenticeship training: LEEDs Levels I and II certifications, Weatherization, OSHA 10, CPR, Flagging and First Aid.
