IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The University of California, Irvine has been awarded a Distance Education Innovation Award by The National University Technology Network (NUTN) for its development of OpenCourseWare content, specifically for its Open Chemistry (OpenChem) project. A distinguished panel of reviewers cited the strength of UCI's OpenCourseWare initiative in its broader applications in reaching significant numbers of students and institutions and for making the entire undergraduate chemistry curriculum available to the public without charge. The awards were presented at NUTN's annual event, NUTN Network 2013 on Sept. 17, 2013 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

UCI OpenChem provides free and open access to 15 quarter-length undergraduate and select graduate chemistry video lectures. The project was the brainchild of lauded UCI Chemistry Professor James Nowick, whose three classes of Organic Chemistry lectures have been viewed thousands of times and have earned praise from students around the world.
