DETROIT, Aug. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- U-Haul Moving and Storage of New Center in Detroit is now open for business. The 250,000 square foot building built in 1920 by the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) is now home to U-Haul. This is just one of seven buildings built by Nabisco in other great American cities.

Located in Detroit's New Center at 899 West Baltimore Street, the building…purchased a little over a year ago…has been transformed into a moving and self-storage facility to serve the do-it-yourself community in Detroit.
U-Haul has poured decades of experience into expanding its footprint through Adaptive Reuse into the Nabisco building. U-Haul Company's decision to reuse this historic building has prevented production of more than 82,000 tons of concrete and 83 tons of metal, and prevented nearly 600 tons of greenhouse gas emissions as compared to new construction and has been heralded by experts and academics as the most sustainable model of development. Reusing the Nabisco building preserves the rich character of the culturally significant area of New Center. Being firmly committed to both Adaptive Reuse and the city of Detroit, U-Haul is collaborating with Wayne State University to study the social, economic and environmental effects of a project like this…located in a community in need of stimulus. For U-Haul, the entire project represents a nexus of not only its business objectives, but its oft-stated sustainability and social objectives as well.
"My team worked night and day to complete this project, and we are proud of the New Center Detroit location and the impact it will have on our community," emphasized David Ruff, president, U-Haul Company Detroit. "Many community members have gone out of their way to show their support for this project and have told me how much they enjoy watching this building come back to life in the city."
The U-Haul Moving and Storage of New Center is a full-service moving and self-storage facility offering truck, trailer and auto-transport rentals along with boxes and moving supplies. The facility features 430 indoor climate-controlled self-storage rooms with covered drive-up loading and unloading docks. First-level self-storage rooms are individually alarmed, with electronically controlled access to rooms 24/7. U-Box portable moving and storage pods are also available at this location.
Additional services to be offered at this location include package signing and receiving, free online account management and free use of loading carts.
U-Haul will be hosting a community celebration and grand-opening event at the end of September.
"U-Haul wants to give back to the city of Detroit," added Ruff. "We are excited to begin establishing partnerships within the community."
There is still much more to do in Detroit…and U-Haul is still looking for additional expansion opportunities, as this city has contributed much to ensure the mobility of North Americans since automobiles were first built on these shores.
