For the past 18 years, these five properties were owned and operated by Kevin and Judy Moyle as Kevin's Self Storage. Six months after building the first storage building in Atlantic Mine, Michigan (Houghton), the Moyles observed the demand for more self‑storage space. Every year, they added one building to the Houghton location before seeing the demand for storage in neighboring areas. They purchased property in Lake Linden, Hancock, Calumet and Dodgeville...a total of 19 buildings to serve "Copper Country," the name given to this area due to its deep history in copper mining.
U-Haul Area Field Manager Terry Mott formed a strong relationship with the Moyles through years of persistent follow-up. This relationship allowed U-Haul the opportunity to become the largest storage provider in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. When the Moyles were ready to sell their five Kevin's Self Storage locations, U‑Haul was at the top of the list for a prospective buyer.
Justin Kaminski, marketing company president of U-Haul Company of Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula explains that U-Haul has already received a warm welcome into these five communities. Kaminski and his team are picking up where the Moyles left off, with plans to add on to the properties and promote growth in the area.
"Each of the five areas we now operate in Copper Country are tight-knit communities with a hometown feel," Kaminski noted. "U-Haul will continue to offer that small town, family oriented service. We have received a warm welcome in these communities due to our providing expanded services that you don't typically find in a small town. These acquisitions are proof that larger companies, such as U-Haul, can operate in smaller towns, if they remember that we are able to be here because of our customers and community support."
U-Haul has already made improvements to these facilities, installing security cameras, adding a full line of moving supplies, providing locks to customers to secure their storage items and the addition of trucks, trailers, and U-Box® moving and self-storage containers. With these added services, these five communities have more solutions to their moving and self-storage needs.
"Our plans for the future are to continue adding more services to help provide the residents of Copper Country with moving and self-storage services that will make their lives easier," Kaminski added.
The acquisition of Kevin's Self Storage was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
