Two Belo Stations Win 2010 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards
DALLAS, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Belo Corp. (NYSE: BLC), one of the nation's largest pure-play, publicly-traded television companies, announced today that two of its television stations were honored with 2010 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton Awards for excellence in broadcast journalism at a ceremony held last night at Columbia University. KHOU-TV in Houston and WWL-TV in New Orleans were two of only 14 winners chosen to receive this award which is one of the most prestigious in broadcast journalism. Since 2000, Belo television stations have received 11 duPont-Columbia Awards, more than any other station group.
KHOU's winning piece, Under Fire: Discrimination and Corruption in the Texas National Guard, was the culmination of a two-year investigation that exposed widespread discrimination and fraud in the Texas National Guard. This is the fourth duPont Silver Baton the KHOU 11 Defenders team has won since the investigative unit was launched in 1998. KHOU recipients of the 2010 duPont-Columbia Award are investigative reporter Mark Greenblatt, executive producer David Raziq and photojournalist Keith Tomshe.
WWL received the honor for its investigative reports on the questionable practices of the city-run agency, New Orleans Affordable Homeownership (NOAH). The series of more than 50 reports uncovered corruption in the agency, which was responsible for administering repairs of homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The WWL honorees include photographers Tom Moore and Bob Parkinson, executive producer, Dominic Massa, executive news director, Chris Slaughter and former anchor/reporter, Lee Zurik.
WWL's NOAH investigation was also honored with a 2008 George Foster Peabody Award and the IRE Medal, a national award given by Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc.
"Belo's ongoing commitment to investigative reporting remains an important cornerstone of our news organizations," said Dunia A. Shive, Belo's president and Chief Executive Officer. "We are honored and grateful for the acknowledgement of KHOU's and WWL's excellent reporting."
