The fully-furnished 2,300-square-foot home features three spacious outdoor living spaces outfitted with a variety of Trex products. A second-story deck is constructed of Trex Transcend®, the industry's number one brand of high-performance decking, in Spiced Rum (a warm earthy umber). Designed to outperform wood, composite and PVC for decades, Transcend offers a superior combination of performance and aesthetics. It resists stains, scratches and mold and features a distinctive and natural-looking, high-definition wood grain pattern. Transcend decking also contains 95 percent recycled content.
The deck is supported by the new Trex Elevations™ Steel Deck Framing System, which is manufactured of dual-coated, galvanized steel for superior aesthetics, durability, longevity and stability when compared to traditional wood substructures. Trex Elevations will prolong the life of the deck and improve its overall appearance. The system is composed of 25 percent recycled steel, and all components are 100 percent recyclable.
Designed for al fresco dining, a barbecue courtyard outside the home's warm and welcoming kitchen features stylish and weather-resistant Trex Outdoor Furniture™, which is manufactured of more than 90 percent recycled content – including post-consumer materials, such as milk jugs and laundry detergent bottles. Trex Transcend decking in the courtyard is guaranteed to stand up to food spills, dropped grilling tools and heavy foot traffic.
A walkway constructed of Trex Transcend decking and framed by Trex Transcend railing in Tree House (a light brown) leads to a living room courtyard, which is a cozy extension of the home's main gathering space. Energy-efficient LED dimmable Trex DeckLighting™ illuminates and adds subtle warmth – while Trex Outdoor Furniture settees create a comfortable seating area amidst the wooded landscape.
"Like Trex, the HGTV Green Home combines innovation, style and sustainability," said Ron Kaplan, chairman, president and CEO of Trex. "As an industry leader, we feel a responsibility to set the standard for environmental-consciousness, and we're proud to support a community and a project that encourages individuals to incorporate eco-friendly products and practices into their everyday lives."
Built on green principles and values, Trex products offer a truly environmentally responsible choice to consumers. As one of the largest recyclers of polyethylene plastic in the United States, Trex salvages and keeps more than 600 million pounds of plastic and wood scrap out of landfills each year. In addition, no trees are cut down to make Trex products. Nearly all the ingredients used to create Trex composite products are being reused by the company – which, in turn, saves waste from building up in landfills and eliminates the need to harvest new materials.
"The design of this year's HGTV Green Home illustrates how to live in harmony with nature while enjoying the latest in eco-conscious luxuries and innovations – making Trex a great choice for our outdoor living spaces," said Jack Thomasson, HGTV Green Home House Planner. "Not only are Trex products extremely low-maintenance and manufactured of recycled content, but their long-lasting beauty and rich colors inspired by the great outdoors perfectly complement the home's regional architecture and beautiful decor."
One lucky, randomly-selected winner will be awarded with the HGTV Green Home in June 2012, as part of a prize package that also includes $100,000 and a 2012 GMC® Terrain®.
