Average Airfares and Hotel Rates Inch Higher as Americans Plan to Celebrate the End of Summer
SOUTHLAKE, Texas, Aug. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- As Labor Day quickly approaches and summer comes to a close, people around the country are considering one last getaway before the weather turns colder, days draw shorter and the kids head back to school. Utilizing its booking data, Travelocity found the average cost of a domestic round trip ticket is $335 for Labor Day weekend. Average daily rates for domestic hotel stays are averaging $171.

Across the board, the cost of travel this Labor Day is up. Domestic fares have moderately risen 1 percent over the same period last year. Hotel average daily rates have shown a more substantial increase, with domestic rates up 12 percent year-over-year.
"Labor Day is the prime weekend for travelers to sneak in one last trip for the summer," says Courtney Scott, senior editor at Travelocity. "Travelers should consider the average airfares and hotel rates outlined by our data as the 'prices to beat.' If they are planning to travel and see a deal, they should not hesitate to book it; prices fluctuate frequently and are likely to increase as the holiday approaches."
Top 10 Most Popular Destinations for Labor Day Weekend
According to Travelocity's booking data, the top destinations for Labor Day 2013 include major cultural centers like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as popular beach and family entertainment locales including Orlando and South Florida. New to the top 10 list this year is Boston, one of America's best cities for historical sightseeing, while Las Vegas fell from number 6 to number 10 and Washington, D.C. fell out of the top 10 entirely.
"Package deals (flight + hotel) are a great way to offset rising travel costs," says Scott. "Booking your flight and hotel together can allow travelers to save up to hundreds of dollars more than by booking separately."
