Top Bristol-Myers Squibb Executive Joins Patton Boggs
WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Patton Boggs LLP has hired Dick Thompson, a top executive at Bristol-Myers Squibb with nearly four decades of public policy experience, to strengthen its hand in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.
Mr. Thompson joins the firm as senior counsel in its Washington office where he will utilize his extensive experience with complex health and pharmaceutical policy issues to help clients navigate a challenging political environment.
"It is a major coup to have such a highly experienced and well-respected leader like Dick Thompson join the firm," said Stuart M. Pape, managing partner of the firm. "Our clients will benefit from his deep industry connections, significant government affairs prowess and experience as an executive at a major international powerhouse like Bristol-Myers Squibb."
Mr. Thompson, known as the "Dean" of the pharmaceutical industry corporate representatives, is a respected leader in the public policy and pharmaceutical industries. He spent the past decade as Bristol-Myers Squibb's senior vice president for policy and government affairs where he established and led a 45-member global staff.
As a member of the Bristol-Myers Squibb's operating committee, Mr. Thompson represented the company to key industry associations and managed the development of major public policy positions. At the time of his retirement in December 2009, Mr. Thompson had served as head of the Washington office for more than 26 years, longer than any current or former industry executive.
During his tenure, he worked to move the company to the top tier of advocacy in the pharmaceutical industry, pioneered a new international government affairs program and led the integration of the government affairs staff in the merger of the Bristol-Myers and Squibb companies.
"Patton Boggs has long been regarded as the premier public policy firm in the country, and I am excited to join such an exalted team," Mr. Thompson said. "I look forward to utilizing my experience at Bristol-Myers Squibb to help clients from the pharmaceutical and other industries achieve their strategic business and policy objectives."
Mr. Thompson spent nearly eight years working on Capitol Hill, including three years as Republican staff director and chief counsel to what is now known as the House Committee on Government Oversight and Reform.
Mr. Thompson moved to Washington in 1970 after serving two years in the U.S. Army, including a tour in Vietnam where he earned the rank of captain.
Mr. Thompson is active in many charitable and civic organizations. He is a vice chairman and trustee of Syracuse University, where he received his master's degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. In addition, he has served as the president and a board member of the Carlton Club, chair of Ford Theatre's board of trustees and as chair of the governance committee and a member of the board of directors of Meridian International Center. He serves as a member of the Federal City Council.
