Tickets to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games on Worldwide Sale
NEW YORK, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- There are a handful of rare occasions where history is made and this year's inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Singapore is one of them. From August 14-26 Singapore will lend its beautiful land and culture to 5,000 young athletes, ages 14-18, from around the globe.
The YOG is an international multi-sport event scheduled to be held every four years in staggered summer and winter events – complementing the current Olympic Games. The idea for this event was introduced by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge in 2001. On July 6, 2007; IOC members at the 119th IOC session in Guatemala City approved the creation of a youth version of the Olympic Games, known today as YOG.
Spectators can now get in on the action with the start of ticket sales for 158 sport competition sessions at 16 competition venues(1) to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG). Around 320,000 tickets for competition became available for sale starting Wednesday, 31 March at 9.00am Singapore time (GMT+8). The highly anticipated tickets were well received with many events being sold out within weeks.
"We are proud to announce that ticket sales to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games are now open. We see increasing excitement as we get closer to the Games. We invite people in Singapore and the world to join us in cheering the Young Olympians from the 205 delegations even as we are watching our favourite sports. With new competition formats unique to YOG, affordably-priced tickets and complimentary public transportation, we hope everyone can join us and be a part of the inaugural YOG," said Mr GOH Kee Nguan, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee.
As the YOG draws closer and athletes are gearing up to compete in the 26 sports come August 2010, we invite the world to come together and support the athletes through watching the Games. To encourage everyone to be a part of this milestone sporting event, the tickets are priced affordably at US$7.30 (Preliminaries), US$10.95 (Quarter Finals/ Semi Finals) and S$21.90 (Finals)(2).
For the first time in the history of Olympic Games, each ticket purchased is accompanied by a Singapore 2010 DBS Visa Prepaid Companion Card(3) that combines payment and transit functionality.
YOG furthers the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect through the promotion of cross-cultural interaction, understanding and learning among participating youths at the Games. New and exciting competition formats such as mixed gender grouping and/or mixed National Olympic Committee teams will be introduced, while some sports will be played in completely new formats to raise the level of excitement for both athlete and spectator experience.
