"Lightstrap photos are bright and clear, even in complete darkness," said beta tester Julio Miles of Rosa Labs, makers of Soylent. "Lightstrap dramatically expands the usefulness of my phone's camera, and I'm constantly excited and impressed at the creative freedom it allows."
Lightstrap is the first product from Brick & Pixel, a Bay Area startup helmed by father-son team Ben and Cassidy Clawson. The two worked together for more than a decade in the medical device industry, helping startups and Fortune 500 companies design, manufacture and launch new medical devices.
Lightstrap was conceived by Cassidy Clawson while swiping through photos from a night out. There wasn't a single shot worth sharing with friends.
The product came to him in an instant: a sleek phone case that doubled as a flash and video light. Drawing from his experience with studio photography and video production, he established requirements for a great device: 10 times brighter than the phone flash, diffuse light, adjustable color temperature and compatible with all camera apps.
"I was sick of setting up shots, taking a picture, and having it not turn out," said Cassidy. "Lightstrap ensures you never miss a moment. And your friends will thank you because the ring light makes for really flattering, glamorous photos."
The design is now finished and transferred to manufacturing partners.
Brick & Pixel is offering Instagram users a chance to win a prototype Lightstrap. Users can enter the contest by tagging a photo #lightstrap. Winning photos will be selected by prominent Instagram users, like San Francisco designer and photographer Drew Beck (@drewbeck).
