The Peninsula Signature Events Announces 2015 Motorsports Event Dates
The Quail Motorcycle Gathering Will Honor Racing Champions Gene Romero and Mert Lawwill on May 16, 2015, as 'Legends of the Sport' Special Guests; Long Tail Cars of Le Mans to be Honored at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on August 14, 2015
CARMEL, Calif., March 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Peninsula Signature Events, a division of The Peninsula Hotels, shared today its 2015 lineup of motorsports events hosted at Quail Lodge & Golf Club. The events calendar will commence on Friday, May 15, 2015 with The Quail Ride, a 100-mile motorcycle journey throughout the Monterey Peninsula. On Saturday, May 16, 2015, The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, presented by TUDOR, a day-long celebration of motorcycling heritage and performance will continue with its "Legends of the Sport" series honoring seminal figures in the sport of motorcycling and offer more than 200 pre- and post-war motorcycles on display.
This year, two legends of the sport will be honored: 1969 AMA Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill and 1970 AMA Grand National Champion Gene Romero will be together in a rare appearance on stage. Lawwill won 17 National Championship races and amassed an incredible 161 AMA Grand National finishes during his 15-year racing career. He is also one of the featured riders in the 1970's motorcycle movie classic "On Any Sunday," where he co-starred with Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith, and in which Romero also appeared. Romero's career spanned 16 years, winning 12 AMA National Championship races and the 1975 Daytona 200. He was one of the first racers to attract sponsorship to the sport of motorcycling. Both Mert Lawwill and Gene Romero were inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998.
In its seventh year, The Quail Motorcycle Gathering will honor both pre- and post-war eras of the world's finest sports and racing bikes. The Gathering will feature A Tribute to Military Motorcycles, paying homage to the men, women and machines that helped defend our country and brought their interest to the motorcycle world. The military display will be a 1942 BMW R-75 Wehrmachtsgespann and, representing the Chopper category, a 1968 BSA Chopper will be admired by guests and attendees alike. Additional categories on display will include: Formula 750 Group, Scooter, American, Antique, British, Japanese, German, Italian, Other European, Competition On/Off Road and Custom/Modified.
The fee to participate as an entrant at The Quail Motorcycle Gathering is $140, and includes two tickets, the opportunity to show one motorcycle, an entrant plaque and event gift bag.
On Friday, August 14, 2015, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, will honor Long Tail Cars of Le Mans with a 1984 Jaguar XJR-5 featured, Coachbuilt Ferraris and Iconic Pre-1965 Porsches. In addition, the traditional classes will include: Pre-War Sports and Racing, Post-War Sports, Post-War Racing, Supercars, Sports and Racing Motorcycles and The Great Ferraris. Now in its 13th year, the event remains the crown jewel of Monterey Car Week for its exclusive display of the past and present's most elite luxury automobiles, complemented by fine cuisine, wine and spirits, all in a festive garden party setting.
Bonhams' 18th annual motorcar auction will be held in conjunction with The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. At the 2014 event, Bonhams grossed $108 million in auction sales, which included the record-breaking sale of a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO at $38,115,000 – the highest price ever paid for a car at a public auction.
