"I am deeply saddened by the human tragedy unfolding in the Horn of Africa, and Mosaic stands beside the Somali people, as well as their neighbors in Kenya and Ethiopia," said Jim Prokopanko, president and CEO of Mosaic. "Mosaic's mission is to help the world grow the food it needs, and when famine occurs, the human suffering caused by hunger strikes a personal note."
"By making this generous gift, Mosaic joins the fight against famine in Somalia, stands with our local Somali community—the largest population of Somalis in the U.S.—and, demonstrates the spirit and generosity of Minnesota's corporate community," said Daniel Wordsworth, president of the American Refugee Committee. "This donation will help the people of Somalia, for whom each day is a struggle to survive."
Mosaic and The Mosaic Company Foundation also have a developmental presence in east Africa. Two of Mosaic's Villages Projects, where Mosaic helps smallholder farmers move out of poverty by increasing crop yields, are in Koraro, Ethiopia and Sauri, Kenya.
The American Refugee Committee and Mosaic have partnered before: assisting people who survived the devastating earthquake in Haiti and supporting the Neighbors Initiative to create change in the U.S. and in Somalia. Mosaic also has partnered with GiveMN, and its $100,000 challenge grant helped Second Harvest Heartland become the top fundraiser during Give to the Max Day on GiveMN in 2010.
Donors can visit www.GiveMN.org and click on the homepage link to make a donation to the ARC Somalia famine relief efforts and have their donation matched. Mosaic is also covering the credit card transaction fees on all donations, so gifts to support lifesaving relief in Somalia will be fully maximized.
Mosaic has a history of helping communities recover from natural disasters: the tsunami in Japan; recent earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and New Zealand; floods in Saskatchewan and Brazil; and hurricanes in Florida.

About The American Refugee Committee:
American Refugee Committee programs are built from the ground up. We work with people at the most vulnerable points in their lives, when they have lost everything to war or disaster. They let us know what they need most, and we work together to develop ways to help them get it. Our programs are as diverse as the people we serve, but they all work together for the same goal: to help people take back control of their lives. We have worked with refugees around the world for more than 30 years, and we help nearly 2.5 million people a year. Through our Neighbors Initiative, we are partnering with the Somali diaspora community to build community in Somalia and in the US. We also have a team on the ground in Somalia who are providing life-saving assistance to people who fled their homes due to the famine crisis. We are based in Minneapolis, MN.
