The Lubrizol Foundation Reports $2.4 Million in 2009 Grants
CLEVELAND, May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Lubrizol Foundation, the philanthropic entity of The Lubrizol Corporation (NYSE: LZ), today announces the release of its 2009 annual report disclosing the distribution of close to $2.4 million in grants to a variety of nonprofit organizations and educational institutions for programs that support education, health and human services, civic and cultural activities and others. The 2009 grants reflect the strong commitment to supporting organizations in communities, primarily within the United States, where Lubrizol operates major facilities.

"The Foundation has increased its strategic focus in order to benefit more effectively those entities we support, not only with funding but also through sharing of best practices, enabling supported non-profit organizations to be more successful," said Dave Enzerra, president, The Lubrizol Foundation. The Foundation's matching gift program awarded $803,303 last year, an increase of close to 3% compared with 2008, and represents employees' continued charitable support. Matching gift dollars were awarded to 1,037 charitable and non-profit organizations. In all, 905 employees and retirees took advantage of this program, which matches, dollar for dollar, individuals' donations to qualifying charitable organizations. In addition, The Foundation's Community Connection program awarded $16,200 to 54 charitable organizations where employees volunteer their time.
Grants to education totaled $560,800, which include $397,800 in total scholarship support to 35 institutions of higher learning. Grants to health and human services organizations totaled $655,727 for the year. Civic and cultural and environmental organizations combined received $273,500. Organizations supporting youth activities received $88,000.
The Foundation continues to match employee contributions to the United Way Services of Greater Cleveland, Lake County and Texas Gulf Coast, as well as United Way agencies in adjacent counties. Support to these United Way agencies totaled $437,727, which includes ongoing annual support as well as employee-match contributions. The Foundation was the single largest donor to the Lake County United Way 2009 campaign, contributing $110,200.
On a local basis, The Foundation awarded $60,000 to The Cleveland Orchestra, in support of the 2009 annual fund; $30,000 to WKSU 89.7 radio station, in support of Phase 2 Conversion to Digital Technology; $25,000 to the Great Lakes Science Center, in support of the Strange Matter Exhibit; $25,000 to Hillcrest Hospital/Cleveland Clinic, in support of the emergency room expansion project; and $25,000 to University Hospital Geauga Medical Campus, toward construction of a holding room in the Imaging Center.
