CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770 announces that acclaimed Broadway, Off-Broadway and film producer Daryl Roth will be the 2016 recipient of the Order of the Golden Sphinx award. Ms. Roth will be honored and presented with the prestigious award at the annual Order of the Golden Sphinx Gala to be held at the Diamond Horseshoe at the Paramount Hotel in New York City on April 11, 2016.
The Order of the Golden Sphinx, named for a traditional symbol of The Hasty Pudding Institute, is the highest honor bestowed by the Institute and recognizes individuals in the entertainment industry for their extraordinary contributions to the performing arts. The recipient represents the Institute's mission to support and foster the performing arts within its membership, at Harvard, and the community at large. Previous recipients of the Order of the Golden Sphinx award include Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Entertainment Inc., David Heyman, founder of Heyday Films and producer of "Gravity," and legendary music producer Clive Davis, Chief Creative Officer of Sony Music.
"We are particularly proud and happy to honor Daryl Roth this year," said Andrew Farkas, Chairman and Grand Sphinx of the Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770. "Daryl is the first female recipient of the Order of the Golden Sphinx, and we could not have dreamed of a more fitting honoree. Broadway-style stage production is at the heart of the Hasty Pudding tradition, and, just like Daryl, the Pudding never shies away from controversial topics. There is an obvious kinship between the sequined high heels of 'Kinky Boots' and those worn for decades by the Hasty Pudding 'Ladies'."
"I was surprised and thrilled to be honored with the Order of the Golden Sphinx, and as the first woman recipient, I am truly grateful," said Daryl Roth. "As a theatre producer, I have tried to champion stories that can empower, engage, and often change people's minds in a positive way, which I hope reflects the creative spirit of the Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770. I accept this award on behalf of all the talented and visionary artists who I have had the good fortune to work with."
DARYL ROTH holds the singular distinction of producing seven Pulitzer Prize-winning plays: Anna in the Tropics; August: Osage County (2008 Tony Award); Clybourne Park (2012 Tony Award); How I Learned to Drive; Proof (2001 Tony Award); Edward Albee's Three Tall Women; and Wit.
The proud recipient of eight Tony Awards, her over 90 award-winning Broadway productions include: Caroline, or Change; Curtains; A Delicate Balance; The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? (2002 Tony Award); It Shoulda Been You; Kinky Boots (2013 Tony Award); The Normal Heart (2011 Tony Award); One Man, Two Guvnors; A Raisin in the Sun (2014 Tony Award); Sylvia; The Tale of the Allergist's Wife; War Horse (2011 Tony Award); Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; The Year of Magical Thinking; and You Can't Take It With You. Off-Broadway credits include: Absolute Brightness; Buyer and Cellar; Closer Than Ever; The Divine Sister; Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron's Love, Loss, and What I Wore; Stars of David; The Temperamentals; and Wiesenthal. Film projects include the upcoming James Lapine film Custody starring Viola Davis; Albert Nobbs starring Glenn Close; and My Dog: An Unconditional Love Story, a documentary exploring the relationships of well-known New Yorkers and their dogs.
Ms. Roth is a Member of the Mayor's Theater Subdistrict Council, an Honorary Trustee for Lincoln Center Theatre and has served on the Board of Directors of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and New York State Council on the Arts. Recent honors include: the 2014 New York Living Landmarks award; the 2013 Einstein Humanitarian Award from The Women's Division and Albert Einstein College of Medicine; the 2012 Family Equality Council Hostetter-Habib Family Award; the 2011 Live Out Loud Humanitarian Award; and the 2010 Lucille Lortel Lifetime Achievement Award.
Ms. Roth was profiled in The New Yorker and twice included in Crain's "100 Most Influential Women in Business."
The Order of the Golden Sphinx gala enfolds as a dinner with special performances by the Hasty Pudding Theatricals and Harvard Krokodiloes undergraduates and alumni, produced by Amanda Lipitz Productions and written and composed by Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde: The Musical, The Explorers Club) and Larry O'Keefe (Legally Blonde: The Musical, Heathers: The Musical), both alumni of the Pudding.
