Tanya Scurry, M.D., Announces New, Integrative Psychiatry Practice -- With Telepsychiatry Option for Maximum Convenience, Affordability
ONTARIO, Calif., April 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Tanya Scurry, M.D., has developed a new telepsychiatry service that offers an alternative to conventional mental health and wellness treatments. More information about these integrative mental health services is available at https://goo.gl/n7LtvB; the practice is located inside the Body and Mind Medical Weight Loss Center, which Dr. Scurry also founded. Dr. Scurry is also looking to engage with clinics and hospitals that want to offer patients these innovative services.
Dr. Scurry brings over 10 years of psychiatric experience to her new practice; nine of those years have been spent practicing addiction psychiatry. Her holistic approach looks at the relationship between sleep, stress, physical activity and other factors to develop an individualized treatment plan. Dr. Scurry has special knowledge and expertise with bariatric surgery and weight management issues, as well as mental health issues commonly faced by military veterans. She has successfully treated anxiety, depression, PTSD and other mental health challenges.
"After weight loss surgery helped me lose 300 pounds, I realized the intricate relationship between nutrition and mental health," explains Dr. Tanya Scurry. "This realization spurred me to learn more about functional medicine — how nutrition, exercise, stress and sleep all contribute to mental and physical health. Functional medicine is, for so many people, a safer and better approach than psychiatric medications. Today, I'm proud to offer these services in-person to people in my community, and to people across the country via telepsychiatry."
At Dr. Scurry's clinic, genetic and nutritional testing are carried out by an independent lab; test results are then studied as part of developing personalized treatments. The medical establishment is just beginning to accept that nutrition and exercise are indeed powerful influencers on a person's mood. It will take time for this knowledge to filter down to the medical schools, but in the meantime, the supporting literature grows every day. For example, the link between daily stress and adrenal fatigue is becoming obvious. Other research points to a potential relationship between food intolerances and autism and depression.
Patients of Dr. Scurry can expect convenience and absolute confidentiality. Her mission is to provide a safe and welcoming space for those who are struggling. In addition, she understands that access to mental health services is woefully inadequate in many areas throughout the nation, but telepsychiatry could eventually reverse this situation. Dr. Scurry also makes time for evening and weekend appointments to help as many people as possible. Because her practice is located inside the Body and Mind Medical Weight Loss Center, in-person psychiatric patients will have access to a fitness center and the expertise of a registered dietitian as part of optimizing their treatment plan.
"Everyone deserves to experience good mental health," says Dr. Scurry, "but sometimes people need a little help to overcome whatever is holding them back. I'm grateful that I discovered the power of integrative medicine when I needed it most. I believe this approach can be transformative for those who have tried and failed to address their issues in other ways."
