TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 31, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tampa General Hospital has received the Bicycle Friendly Business (BFBSM) silver award from the League of American Bicyclists.
The League of American Bicyclists, the nation's oldest bicycle advocacy organization, is dedicated to creating a bicycle-friendly America. Tampa General is the first hospital in Florida to earn a silver award. Organizations that receive the silver award are continuing to develop their bike-friendly programs.
"It's significant that Tampa General received this honor," said Kim Christine, manager of Employee Wellness, who spearheaded the effort. "It means we care enough about the health of our employees, and of the people who live in our community, to try to make biking easier and more accessible to everyone."
The hospital encourages biking among employees. Those who bike to work can park their bikes in a secured area on the first floor of the employee garage. Designated bike parking spaces are also available in the visitor's garage.
Tampa General offers wellness incentives to employees who bike to work. The hospital is starting a bike club for employees who want to ride together, and a bike mentoring group for those who want to start biking.
