Survey Reveals 84% of All Women Skip Simple Solution Proven to Prevent Aging
Although skin-aging UVA rays are present year-round, Kari Gran poll shows most women do not use sunscreen daily
SEATTLE, Feb. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Seattle-based eco-luxe beauty brand, Kari Gran, today reported that based on a recent survey* only 16% of American women use sunscreen as part of their daily beauty routine, despite the fact ever-present UVA rays have been linked to skin aging1. Due to the need for further sunscreen education, Kari Gran has published How does Sunscreen Measure Up?, an infographic educating women about the importance of incorporating sunscreen, such as its Three Sixty Five SPF 28, into their daily regimen.
According to a report titled, "Sunscreen and Prevention of Skin Aging. A Randomized Trial1." published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers assigned a group to apply SPF 15 to their head, neck, arms and hands every morning, after bathing and spending a couple hours in the sun, and after sweating heavily. Those assigned to apply sunscreen daily compared to those who applied at their discretion were less likely to have increased skin aging after four and a half years. The end results indicated that daily use of sunscreen seems to protect against aging.
"Given the amount of effort put into beauty and anti-aging, it's amazing the vast majority of women are not doing one of the easiest things—wearing sunscreen every day—to prevent their facial skin from photoaging," said Kari Gran, founder of eponymous brand. "Most people don't realize UVA rays are present every day, despite what the weather is, and these rays penetrate clouds and glass, so your face is exposed to potential damage every day."
Kari Gran's Three Sixty Five SPF 28 sunscreen is the latest addition to its skin care and makeup line, and it was developed specifically to protect facial skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure. Crucial to Three Sixty Five's effectiveness is its broad-spectrum coverage, which means the sunscreen blocks both the UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.
UVB rays are responsible for causing reddening and sunburn, and are most intense in bright sunshine, which is when many people take extra care to apply sunscreen. UVA rays, however, are present daily, even during cool and cloudy fall and winter months when many forego sunscreen. UVA rays enter the skin more deeply than UVB rays, break down collagen and play a major part in skin aging and wrinkling of the skin2.
"I believe facial sunscreen should be viewed just like a cleanser or moisturizer – a can't miss step every day," noted Gran. "Also importantly, while many women wear skincare and makeup products with SPF in them, it may not be doing the job. Typically, the added sunscreen is made with ingredients such as oxybenzone, which has been known to break down after a few hours of exposure and linked to hormone disruption."
Kari Gran's Three Sixty Five is a mineral sunscreen with 17% non-nano zinc oxide as an active ingredient – it sits on top of the skin to physically deflect damaging rays and is effective immediately. This differs from sunscreen with ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone and octisalate which take some 20 plus minutes to absorb into the skin before becoming active and should be reapplied regularly3.
And while some women may shy away from mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide given the white sheen the active ingredient can cause, Kari Gran has taken extra care to off-set the white tint with unique ingredients. Non-GMO red raspberry and French plum seed oils, and organic macadamia nut and avocado oils, among others, offset the white tint and complete the sunscreen with a lovely and luxurious scent and feel.
Three Sixty Five is available in a 30 ml bottle for $48, in a 50 ml bottle for $75, and as part of the Kari Gran Mini Kit for $48 and the complete Kari Gran System Plus for $180. All products are available at www.karigran.com.
*The Green Beauty Barometer was conducted online within the United States by Harris Poll on behalf of Kari Gran from August 9-11, 2016 among 1,126 U.S. women ages 18 and older. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
