Supreme Court Overturns Chicago Gun Ban

GREEN BAY, Wis., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- For nearly 30 years, the city of Chicago had been home to one of the most stringent gun bans in the country, making it illegal for its citizens to possess handguns inside city limits in an attempt to combat the gang and firearm violence that troubled the city. With the newly overturned gun ban following the case of McDonald v. Chicago, residents of Chicago are once again able to support their Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms.

This wasn't the first case to be filed in favor of supporting Second Amendment rights in Chicago. Following the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case District of Columbia v. Heller, which ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual's civil right to keep and bear arms and that a municipal gun ban goes against that right, the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) and the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) filed a federal lawsuit challenging the city of Chicago's handgun ban, calling it unconstitutional.
