Students from Cortiva Institute Get in the Game by Providing Massage Therapy Skills to Philadelphia Union Soccer Team
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., June 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Students from Cortiva Institute School of Massage Therapy in Pennsylvania are getting the opportunity of a lifetime by being offered the chance to provide professional massage therapy to the Philadelphia Union Soccer team.
"Working with a professional sports team is a unique opportunity and so for our students, especially for those interested in working in the area of sports massage, this is an amazing experience," said Jeff Mann, president of Cortiva Institute King of Prussia campus.
Students interested in volunteering their skills to the Philadelphia Union submitted an essay as part of their application with four students being selected, including Linda Geraghty who explained she had personal reasons for applying. "Both my sons played sports so I know first-hand how injuries and tired muscles can impact performance. The idea of being able to provide rejuvenating massage to professional athletes was very appealing to me." She added that she was proud to demonstrate "the quality of massage therapy we learn here at Cortiva."
Sports massage has become an increasingly important component to a sports team's overall health and wellness approach, according to Mann. "Pre-event and post-event massage is an important component in preventing or reducing injury. Additionally, restorative massage, provided during training, helps athletes maintain their fitness and competitive levels. Lastly, rehabilitative sports massage helps get an athlete back to shape after an injury."
Philadelphia Union soccer team's home base is PPL Park, a state-of-the-art 18,500-seat Major League Soccer stadium, just over 15 miles from Center City, Philadelphia. According to the team's website, PPL Park was the catalyst for a spectacular $500 million waterfront revitalization expected to bring "renewed life and vitality" to the historic city of Chester.
