Electrifying Turkey's Cars—12 OEMs are Expected to Launch EV Models in Turkey in Next 5 Years
This study provides an analysis of the electric vehicle market in Turkey. It also illustrates the growth opportunities for electric vehicles and discusses the Turkish Government's role in the market. It provides the structure of the Turkish energy sector and its impact on the electric vehicle market. It also looks at charging infrastructure and its future. The study includes a forecast of the electric vehicle market with the introduction of different OEMs. It describes different electric vehicle types such as city electric vehicles, range extenders, plug-in hybrids, and also includes a market breakdown of charging modes.
EV Market: Key Take Away, Turkey, 2012–2020
- In 2012, approximately 190 electric vehicles (EVs) were sold in Turkey and Frost & Sullivan expects the market to grow at a CAGR of xx% between 2012 and 2020.
- Approximately xx public charging stations were installed in Turkey by the end of 2012. However, most of them are demo stations installed in order to create awareness.
- Approximately xx charging stations are expected to be installed in Turkey by 2020. In addition to Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, xx more cities along the Marmara, Aegean, and Çukurova Mega-corridor are expected to have EV charging infrastructure.
- Currently only RENAULT-MA?S is producing its Renault Fluence Z.E. model in Turkey.
- There is probability that xx more OEMs will start producing EVs in Turkey.
- There is a high possibility that commercial vehicle (CV) manufacturers, due to economies of scale, will produce only vehicle bodies in Turkey which will then be exported and integrated with electric engines and batteries in other countries.
- Similar to other developed countries, Turkey also has separate tariff schemes for electricity usage during the day and night. This enables low cost charging of EVs at night.
- Privatisation of distribution companies started in 2008, and will go on till 2015. With that smart grid implimentation has also started. By 2020, Turkey is expected to spend € billion on smart grid applications.
- The Reduced Special Consumption Tax (SCT) for different electric power ranges is the only incentive to increase the sales of EV. However, it is not applicable for range-extenders.
- The government is currently working on the new carbon emission-based tax regulation and may introduce it instead of the engine volume-based tax for vehicles.
