PITTSBURGH, Sept. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that members of its Locals 2102 and 3267 at Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel in Pueblo, Colo., this week ratified a new, five-year contract that covers about 750 workers.
The agreement, which will expire on Sept. 10, 2022, includes wage and pension improvements, maintains quality health insurance with no premiums for employees, strengthens contract language and provides a ratification signing bonus.
USW District 12 Director Bob LaVenture said that the newly ratified contract will bolster job security for the current workforce and may lead to major investments in the Pueblo facility.
"As Evraz management considers locations where it may build a new rail mill in the U.S., we have made a strong case for Pueblo by passing this contract," LaVenture said. "Such an investment would bring with it stability and security for current and future generations of area steelworkers."
LaVenture also thanked the local Contract Action Teams and bargaining committee for jobs well done and commended the work of the district staff and international headquarters Strategic Campaigns department who worked with them.
"We showed that we are strongest when we stand together," LaVenture said. "It takes a lot of time, work and solidarity to build a union, and our efforts have been rewarded with a fair contract."
The USW also represents about 900 workers at Evraz Regina and another 300 at Evraz Calgary operations in Canada, where members ratified a new contract earlier this month after 16 months of difficult negotiations.
The USW represents 850,000 men and women employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in public sector and service occupations.
