St. Mary's Medical Center Offers Robotic Guidance System for Spine Surgery
St. Mary's is the only hospital in the Bay Area to offer this state-of-the-art technology
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Dignity Health St. Mary's Medical Center has added the Mazor Robotics Renaissance™ computer-generated guidance system to its multidisciplinary Spine Center. St. Mary's is the only hospital in the Bay Area to exclusively offer this state-of-the-art technology for spine surgery.
The Mazor Renaissance™ robot-assisted system supports more accurate implant placement during lumbar and thoracic spine fusion cases with precise computer guidance. It is used to treat patients suffering from debilitating back pain or limited range of motion caused by spinal deformities and degenerative conditions such as slipped vertebrae, scoliosis, kyphosis, and spinal nerve impingement (pinched nerves). Patients who have also had multiple, failed spine surgeries turn to this technology to help correct and repair previous surgeries. Through the use of the Mazor Renaissance™ robot-assisted system, patients experience fewer complications and revisions, as well as faster recovery time.
The surgical robot, which is the size of a 12-ounce beverage can, enables fast and precise placement of spinal implants, avoiding nerves, blood vessels, and other vital structures. It also enables surgeons to perform surgery more efficiently in cases of scoliosis and revision surgery.
"We're very proud to be able to bring this leading-edge technology to San Francisco," said Dr. Dimitriy Kondrashov, surgeon at the St. Mary's Spine Center. "The addition of the Mazor robot to our Spine Center means patients will have access to the most advanced care at the most experienced facility in San Francisco."
Spine Center surgeons at St. Mary's Medical Center have been leading the advancement of spine surgery in San Francisco for the last two decades. In 2005, Drs. James Zucherman and Ken Hsu, surgeons on the St. Mary's medical staff, invented the groundbreaking X-Stop implant which offers relief to patients with spinal stenosis. The Spine Center specializes in both less invasive surgeries as well as complex reconstructions for scoliosis and revision operations. The hospital also offers other innovative procedures, including artificial disc replacement and motion preservation devices that stabilize a diseased section of the spine without fusion. The St. Mary's Spine Center is the longest-standing continually operating Center of its kind in the western United States.
