NEW YORK, Nov. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Tim Masick, senior colorist at Company 3, one of the companies that's a part of Deluxe's award-winning Creative Services Group, was a major component of yesterday's first ever YouTube Music Awards (YTMA). Masick was able to color grade live performances, creating instantaneous music videos ready for air. The live music video broadcast was a concept helmed by creative director Spike Jonze who wanted to harness the spontaneity and creativity often seen in the YouTube sphere. Masick explains: "Instead of the typical slick and polished sheen of most award shows, Jonze and Chris Blauvelt, Director of Photography for the YTMA, wanted a more cinematic and intimate mood. I had to work very closely with each of the directors to set the proper tone for each live music video."

The awards were hosted in a spacious warehouse to accommodate the 5 live sets and 16 cameras for the 9 performing artists, a set up a theatre would not have been able to hold. The performers included Company 3 clients Eminem, Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire and OK GO, in addition to Avicii, Earl Sweatshirt ft. Tyler the Creator, M.I.A, CDZA, and Lindsey Stirling. Each artist was coupled with directors including Chris Milk, James Larese, Joe Sabia, Ray Tintori, Romain Gavras, and writer Lena Dunham who were able to epitomize the feel and look of their videos in real time, a luxury usually seen by fans after the fact.
Masick further contributed to the mood of the recording through the use of Company 3's state of the art technology. The workflow was established prior to the production, creating seamless artistry on set. During the 90 minute live stream, engineers merged the virtual layer to the transmitted video while Masick supervised color as the live feed went down. The equipment was provided by EC3, a collaboration of Company 3 and EFILM, a leading near-set Digital Intermediate mobile color suite. EC3 provides directors and DPs the ability to color grade as they are shooting anywhere in the world. Masick felt assured he could overcome the difficulties of a live broadcast: "Drawing on the Deluxe/Co3/EFILM knowledge base, with only one week before the event went live we were able to confidently accept the project technically and time wise." Masick later mentioned, "Setting the color for the YTMA was very challenging, yet very rewarding."
