Spill Center Opens Kenya Branch for Spill Response in East Africa

HUDSON, Mass., June 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Spill Center, a North American leader in support services for companies involved in accidental spills of hazardous materials, fuel and other regulated substances, has opened a branch in Nairobi, Kenya, to serve clients in East Africa.

Founded in Massachusetts over 20 years ago, Spill Center provides clients throughout the U.S. and Canada with contingency planning, emergency response coordination after spills, as well as regulatory reporting services and environmental claims management services.

In East Africa, Spill Center is using cell phone service, the Internet and a 24-hour call-center to provide services in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, according to Managing Director Gerhard Hochmuth. As in the U.S., every East African Spill Center client has a spill contingency plan tailored to the needs of his operation, he related.

The contingency plan, stored online at Spill Center's secure website, contains spill handling, reporting and cleanup instructions for each client. A single phone call or e-mail to Spill Center after a spill activates the plan and triggers an appropriate response based on the type of release, noted Hochmuth.

Spill Center was founded in 1990 by Thomas Moses, president, who holds a law degree and is a former toxicologist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He received a certificate in Hazardous Materials Control and Emergency Response from Georgia Institute of Technology and has served as secretary of the Commercial Vehicle Alliance Security Committee and panel chair for the National Academies' Transportation Research Board.

Moses, a recognized authority on environmental spills and regulatory issues, said he believes that no company should ever have enough spills to get good at handling them properly. Clients rely on Spill Center's staff of trained associates, who are experienced in environmental, technical and legal matters, for support, he added.
