TROY, N.Y., Oct. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A virtual reality startup will both sponsor and participate in the 2016 MIT Media Labs virtual reality hackathon this Oct. 7 through 10.
SpaceoutVR, Inc., headquartered in Troy, N.Y., joins AT&T, Sony Samsung, Unity 3D, Qualcomm and many other companies in providing sponsorship for "Reality, Virtually," a competition that aims to stretch the limits of virtual reality development into new and less-cultivated fields. Sponsors will get a first look at new apps for their platforms and get to see how developers and designers create app solutions that fit new VR and AR use cases.
"We're looking forward to demonstrating our VR software with the developer community," said V. Owen Bush, CEO of SpaceoutVR, Inc., noting that the company will be providing vital tech support to hackers working on the Google Daydream VR software development kit released yesterday. "For us, this is a great way to take a look at the full capabilities of Google's Daydream platform, with the best and brightest engineering minds assisting this process."
Bush said he expects hundreds of millions of Daydream VR Android devices being in use within the next few years. Currently, the Spaceout.VR integrated VR content platform is in beta, available as a free software package for the iPhone and Android, with a 1.0 release expected before the end of year.
"We are providing the engineering support and oversight to hackers, that will catapult the development platform into the mainstream," said Dennis Adamo, SpaceoutVR, Inc. chief operating officer. "We hope to be able to join the developer community of Google Daydream to help foster the application ecosystem that will be developed behind the Google Daydream platform. And the hundreds of millions of devices it will eventually be launched on."
The hackathon, which will take place on MIT campus in Cambridge, Mass., will include participants from MIT and other universities, as well as members of virtual reality and augmented reality communities from around the country.
On Sunday Oct. 9, 2016 project presentations and demonstrations begin. Finalists will then present to a panel of judges comprised of the leading technologists, designers and business leaders on Monday morning, Oct. 10, after which prizes will be awarded.
The Reality, Virtually, Hackathon is organized by a team of AR/VR experts, developers, industry executives, MIT undergraduate and graduate students and alumni and students from the Harvard Business School.
Workshops will be held the day before the Hackathon, to bring participants up to speed with development platforms, specifics about headset platforms, software tools, and design.
Mentors, skilled in design, platform development and vertical VR and AR applications will provide guidance to and help participants breakthrough conceptual and development roadblocks.
