PURCHASE, N.Y., Dec. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Solo Technology Holdings, LLC, creator of the iKeyp, the first smartphone-enabled personal safe designed to disrupt the cycle of prescription drug theft and abuse, has announced a three-month campaign with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to promote the safeguarding of prescription drugs in the home. The company will donate 25 percent of all profits from sales during the campaign to directly benefit the non-profit's mission to support families struggling with substance use.
The campaign launch coincides with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids' Winter Wish Gala held on December 13 in New York City. Normally priced at $149, the iKeyp safe will be available to purchase for $119 at go.ikeyp.com through the duration of the campaign, which concludes on March 12, 2017. Current or new subscribers who have signed up for the newsletter at medicineabuseproject.org (free to join) may purchase the iKeyp safe for a further discounted price of only $99.
According to a 2014 study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, every day 2,500 kids between the age of 12 and 17 abuse a prescription pain reliever for the first time. Many parents are not aware that their own medicine cabinets are potential sources of these drugs for teenage use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has deemed prescription medication abuse an epidemic in the United States. An astounding 80% of heroin users report first using prescription pain relievers before inevitability turning to heroin, which has an almost identical chemical compound.
The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids translates the science of teen drug use and addiction into actionable information and guidance. The non-profit helps families understand the ever-changing drug landscape and learn how to effectively communicate with teens, and provides direct support to parents dealing with a child's drug use.
"We all can play a part to turn the tide on prescription drug abuse," said Marcia Lee Taylor, president and CEO of the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. "We are encouraged to see new ideas and resources become available to reduce teen medicine abuse. Innovative lock box solutions like the iKeyp safe are an important tool to ensure prescription drugs stay out of the hands of children and teens."
Launched in 2012 by the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, The Medicine Abuse Project is a national action campaign that aims to prevent teens from abusing medicine. The campaign provides comprehensive resources for parents and caregivers, law enforcement officials, health care providers, educators and others so that everyone can take a stand and help end medicine abuse.
"The abuse of prescription medication, particularly pain relievers such as opioids, is destroying families and communities across the country," said Jeffrey I. Hermann, founder and CEO of Solo Technology Holdings, LLC. "We are honored to support the vital work done by the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids and believe personal medication security is essential to stopping the prescription drug epidemic."
According to the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, more than 3 in 5 teens say prescription pain relievers are easy to get from their parents' medicine cabinet. The CDC recommends storing opioids in a secure, preferably locked location. "The iKeyp safe has been engineered primarily to safeguard prescription medications in the home and reinforces the recommendations recently outlined by the CDC," said Hermann.
The patent-pending iKeyp safe provides a simple and effective way to safeguard medications that seamlessly fits into existing daily routines. Unlike other safes on the market, the iKeyp is easy to install, connects to the Internet and provides owners with real-time security alerts and intelligent medication reminders.
Key features of the iKeyp include:
- Real-time security alerts and medication reminders via text, email or mobile app
- Audible and visual alerts for non-smartphone users
- Easy to use, water-resistant digital combination keypad
- Humidity-resistant seal helps keep medications dry
- Installs securely, without tools, in minutes
- Fail-safe backup key access
