BROOKLYN, N.Y., Aug. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Park Slope-based MoralEyes, a wholesaler and retailer of reading glasses and sunglasses, announced today a city-wide used-glasses recycling program to be launched the weekend of August 13th & 14th.

Inspired by Blake Mycoskie of TOMS shoes, MoralEyes donates a pair of reading glasses to their non-profit partner New Eyes for the Needy for every pair sold. To date, MoralEyes has donated over 7,500 pairs -- with a retail value of over $150,000 -- and with the launch of their used-glasses recycling program, the company hopes to expand their contribution exponentially.
"Every year, over 4,000,000 pairs of glasses are thrown away in North America alone, so the recycling potential is enormous. It's just a matter of giving people access to convenient donation receptacles," says Joe Sacks, CEO of MoralEyes. "And that's what we're providing with our used-glasses recycling boxes."
The recycling initiative commences on Saturday, August 13th. Eyeglasses of all kinds can be dropped off at two Run4Kiva 5K early-registration locations: JackRabbit Union Square from 11am-1pm and JackRabbit Park Slope 3pm-5pm. The recycling program will continue at the Run4Kiva 5K registration, Sunday, August 14, starting at 8:30AM EDT at Knights of Columbus (1511 10th Avenue off of Prospect Park Southwest, a block from the race start and finish).
The collection will continue at The New York International Gift Fair, New York's Newest at Pier 92, MoralEyes' booth is # 33040.
To encourage donations, MoralEyes will hold a drawing for donors to win an iPad 2, with entries being given for each pair of glasses dropped off between Saturday, August 13th and Wednesday August 17th. The drawing will take place on Thursday, August 18th, with the winner announced via Facebook and Twitter.
Storeowners and entrepreneurs interested in adding a glasses recycling box to their establishment may sign up at the MoralEyes booth at the International Gift Fair, the registration table at the Run4Kiva 5K, or by contacting MoralEyes during regular business hours. The recycling program will continue indefinitely, with recycling boxes set up in retail and public spaces around New York City.
Over 1,000 recycling boxes have been produced so far, with more on the horizon.
"We hope to grow the program nation-wide in the coming months," says Sacks.
MoralEyes is located at 247 Prospect Ave Suite #2, Brooklyn, NY 11215.
