Social Messaging App Chatous Instantly Connects People in Engaging Conversations; Reaches 2 Billion Messages Sent
Announces $2.1 Million in Funding led by General Catalyst
PALO ALTO, Calif., Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Chatous, a social messaging app that matches people in one-on-one conversations, today announced its users have sent over two billion messages through the platform. Over three million people worldwide have downloaded the app, with over one million signing up in the last three weeks. The company also announced it has previously raised $2.1 million in funding from General Catalyst, XSeed Capital, and Slow Ventures. As part of the funding, Kevin Colleran, venture partner at General Catalyst and one of Facebook's first 10 employees, joined Chatous's Board of Directors.
Chatous offers a balance between anonymity and identity. Users can write about themselves allowing them to connect over shared interests, but the app doesn't utilize a public profile or forum. Instead, users are matched in one-on-one conversations where they can express themselves candidly.
As attention spans continue to dwindle, many apps offer ephemeral content that disappears in a short amount of time. Chatous, on the other hand, keeps its users engaged in ongoing conversation and, on average, produces over 650 messages from each user. Collectively, Chatous users spend over 150 million minutes a month on the platform.
Chatous introduces a social dynamic that has the potential to address the inherent human need for connection. "The Internet was supposed to make us all more connected, but social media today often just makes us feel more lonely and isolated," said Chatous CEO and co-founder Parth Bhakta. "Our vision for Chatous is to be part of a movement to encourage more meaningful human connections and we believe the traction we have gained proves that consumers are looking for this as well."
Chatous users value the ability to interact with others based on mutual interests and a short bio, rather than a profile picture, feed of photos, or an anonymous broadcast. "Most apps just throw you in a chat with someone you know nothing about, but this one is different because you can read a little about them and decide whether you're interested in talking to them or not," said an avid Chatous user.
The app falls into its own category of social messaging. It's not completely anonymous - as users can choose a display name, list their interests, and write a short bio. There isn't any public posting and no profile pictures or need to maintain a public image. Chatous is a fun, global community where you can instantly connect and talk about what matters to you.
About Chatous:
Chatous was founded in November 2012 by three graduate students in Computer Science at Stanford University. Chatous was initially born from a research project focused on predicting human compatibility in online chat networks. Over 3 million people have downloaded the Chatous mobile application, which instantly connects people in engaging conversations.
